I decided it was time to sort the kitchen cupboards out. Prompted by the need to get a tin of coconut milk out, which was stuffed at the back of a shelf. So, I drag everything off the shelves of the one where the tins/bottles are. As I'm doing that I'm sorting the stuff into "Best Before" date order.

2008/9 got put back on the top shelf unless it was something I'm going to use soon. The close to expiry stuff went on the middle shelf. The bottom shelf has the tea/coffee/sugar/salt/pepper(s) on it.

So, I found the coconut milk = good. BBE Dec 06 = dubious, so I decided to pass on that, and just use creamed coconut instead.

I also seem to have acquired about 6 jars of honey, none of which have any kind of date code on them, so I can't even guess how old they are. What was more worrying than an excess of honey, was a tin of "Easy Fried Onions (cooked in Olive Oil)". I'm not exactly sure of how or why I came to have them, the mere thought revolts me. I'll have to assume I bought them at some point a long time ago, after all the "best before" on them was Apr 03. That means they have moved house at least once with me.

There were no other unwelcome surprises... But does anyone want a spare 350ml bottle of Tabasco? I appear to have 2 unopened.

Tomorrow I may even try to sort the spice shelf out.

Apparently honey never goes out of date - stuff found in pots in the tombs of the Pharoahs was apparently still safe to eat.

Don't be a slave to the moron consumer nazi division.

ANYTHING in can, provided the can isn't bashed, probably has a shelf life of decades.

Honey is pretty much sugar - don't eat it after it's so hard you can't get it out of the jar, otherwise, it's fine.

Oh, I gaily ignore BBE dates. But having extracted the contents of the tin of coconut milk I *really* decided it wasn't a good idea. I smelled a bit odd.

The big joke though is the box of rock salt: BBE Jun 2010...

Bollocks. If it's hard that just means it has crystalised, just stand the jar in a bowl of warm water until it is runny again. The only time honey will "go off" is if it has had water get into it that may start it fermenting. </ex-beekeeper as of less than a fortnight ago>.

If you want rid of the honey you could donate it in this direction in return for some mead once it's been through "processing" :-)

Tempting... OTOH, unless it's non-alcoholic mead I'll see no personal benefit.

I'll think on't.

Ah! Mmmm mead. My mother bought me a bottle when I arrived in 'sunny' Kernow. Seems to be becoming a bit of a ritual now; I arrive and immediately get a bottle of the stuff planted in my hands.

Thanks for the comment on my post in mtf. I hope you don't mind me adding you. I couldn't help but notice your name, good choice ^_^.

I have to say, I did used to like a drop of mead from time to time. But no more. Pass the orange juice please. :)
