At the moment I'm shaking like a leaf, and have taken valium.

In the post was a letter from Leighton Hospital, where I was yesterday for the bewb examination.

The letter is a standard appointment letter but it starts:

A appointment has been made for you to attend the BREAST CARE CLINIC

on Friday 9th July 2010 at 9:40am

at the Macmillan Cancer Unit, Leighton Hospital, Crewe

Obviously they saw something when they reviewed the ultrasound scans.

Now can I be scared?

Alice.

that is so scary

but not long to worry over it

I don't know what to say other than if I were nearer I'd be there with HUGS and cuppas and cake or chocolate

I'm hear and listening like lots of your friends, keep holding on, you've been through a lot, you can get through this too

They'd call you in if it was a benign cyst, or if it was inconclusive, aqnd if they haven't found anything then they'd still want you in to speak about next steps.

Yes, this. No need to panic yet sweetheart, as this is pretty much routine xx

HUGS

This is, as others have said, standard practice, but that doesn't stop it being scary!

As other people have said this will likely just be them following a standard procedure regardless of what the results of the examination are.

Not quite the same situation I know but a couple of years ago I asked to be tested for the BRCA alleles that increase suceptibility to cancer. Just by asking for this and having a bad family history I ended up being referred to a cancer surgeon to talk about the options like prophylactic surgery and regular breast exams (at a far earlier age than women generally have them)! A few weeks after having a blood sample taken I got a letter asking me to go back for my results and had to beg for them to just give me the darn answer over the phone. The point is, once you're in their system they tend to give you the works.

Hopefully it is just routine x

If they've found a shadow, they'll want to do a biopsy... but that still doesn't mean it's anything malign nessecarily... though I would understand if you were scared - it's a scary thing.

On the other hand, they may well just want to talk to you about a non-result.

FWIW, they called me in even when they were pretty damn sure it was just a milk duct in the wrong place. Which it was.

Telling you not to worry is a waste of time, so I won't.
But like everyone else who's commented here, I suspect that it's the wording of the clinic name that's at 'fault' and that this is routine.

Is this just where the breast clinic is based? I went last year for a painful lump & wasted 2 weeks of hardly any sleep worrying (plus being in agony) for it to be an infection that had gone by the time my appointment came.

Now we've spoked to the hospital, this, even though it was dated 29th was for the original appointment that got changed to the 29th.

It also seems that depending on how the appointment is generated it might say MacMillan Cancer Centre or Main Outpatients the result either way is seeing the consultants in the Cancer Centre and having any imaging done in the Breast Screening Unit in the main hospital.

Easier said that done, but try your best not to worry. I got a painful lump in my other breast a couple of months ago & it turned out to be mastitis, but I didn't have all the worry as it was "been there, done that" I asked for them not to refer me to the breast clinic & to see if it cleared up after antibiotics & it did.
