I have a patch of land (aka the back garden) on the other side of the lane at the back of the house. Half of this land is hard standing for a car (which I don't have). The other part is a wilderness that hasn't been touched for significantly longer than I've lived here (3.5 years).

I finally decided that "something must be done"1. So I duly wandered off down to the garden centre and purchased some new digging implements. Namely a spade and fork. Could do with getting a rake, as well. Why is it that digging spades these days generally seem to be missing the tread on the top of the blade? The one I bought was the only one in stock (out of 5 different makes) that did.

Back home, the easy part of the job done, I started by clearing the detritus of the years up - not much really: 1 plastic bottle, and an old fridge door! Thinned out the overgrowth including fair number of brambles) and started digging the plot over. Stopped for the day once I'd got it 1/3rd done. The rest should be easier, as it shouldn't be full of tree roots.

I've yet to decide what to do with it once it's dug over.

Alice.
