Or "How not to win friends and influence people".

As usual I was waiting for the 17:11 Manchester Airport train at Sheffield. I looked like it was going to be busy as the platform was looking rather more crowded than normal.

When the train arrives there forms the usual scrum around the doors, I'm standing beside and slightly in front of an older woman, and from immediately behind her comes a man's voice:

"Darling, push on, push on don't mind about anyone else, just push on. We've been waiting here hours, unlike them. Just push on in front of them."

At this point she tries to push past...

Normally, I'd have let her on the train in front of me. But because of the urging from her travelling partner, I ensured that she didn't get on in front of me.

Rude of me? Yes, but I'm sorry, rudeness sometimes deserves to be met by rudeness. And as for waiting at Sheffield for hours, there is a half hourly service between Sheffield and Manchester.

P'ed off at the time, Alice.
